Villa de Leyva is a popular long weekend destination for Bogotanos throughout the year, and the town fills up fast at Colombian public holidays. The Wind and Kite Festival in August draws large crowds to the Plaza Mayor for two days of competition. In December, the Festival de las Luces (Festival of Lights) fills the square with candles, fireworks, and music during the holiday period. Weekdays outside of holiday periods offer a much quieter experience of the town.
