Getting Around

The historic centre is the most walkable part of any major Ecuadorian city — compact, largely flat to gently hilly, and densely packed with things to see. Most visitors spend the majority of their time on foot.

Taxis are cheap by any standard and generally safe; insist on the meter (taxímetro) or agree a price before getting in. City buses cover the outer neighbourhoods and are useful for reaching the Terminal Terrestre.

The Tomebamba riverside path is pleasant for cycling and walking — a green corridor running along the south edge of the historic centre with views up to the colonial facades on the bluff above. Bike rental is available in the city centre.

Walking tours of the colonial centre depart from Parque Calderón and are a good way to get oriented on arrival; the municipal tourism office on the plaza can advise on guided options.
