Cuenca rewards unhurried exploration. The colonial architecture is exceptionally well preserved — churches, convents and plazas fill the compact historic centre — and the city's markets, museums and riverside walks keep visitors occupied for several days. Beyond the city, Cajas National Park and the Ingapirca ruins are among Ecuador's best excursions.
