Historic Centre Cafés

The streets of the historic centre are well supplied with cafés serving locally grown highland coffee — Ecuador produces good coffee, and Cuenca's altitude and cool climate make it a natural place to appreciate a proper cup. Traditional sweets go well with it: pristiños (fried pastry with honey, especially around Corpus Christi), quimbolitos (steamed sweet tamales wrapped in leaves), and the soft nougat sold by street vendors. In the evenings the same neighbourhood transitions to wine bars and craft beer spots on and around Calle Larga, where the expat community mingles with local university students.
