Getting There

The main point of entry is Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU) in Asuncion, about 9km northeast of the city centre. It receives international flights from Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Lima, Panama City, Bogotá, and Miami. TAM, LATAM, Copa, and Aerolíneas Argentinas are among the carriers operating routes here. Flights are rarely direct from Europe or North America; most routes connect through São Paulo or Buenos Aires.

By bus is by far the most common way to arrive from neighbouring countries. Daily services connect Asunción's Terminal de Ómnibus with Buenos Aires (around 18 hours), São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Córdoba, Santa Fe, and Montevideo. The route from Buenos Aires is well served and comfortable with reclining-seat coaches. From the Brazilian side, most travellers enter via Ciudad del Este on the border with Foz do Iguaçu.

By road from Argentina, the main crossing is via Encarnacion over the San Roque González de Santa Cruz bridge to Posadas. A second route enters from the north via Clorinda–Puerto Falcón. Roads from Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil) to Ciudad del Este are well paved.

Visa requirements vary significantly by nationality. Most EU nationals can enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Citizens of the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand require a visa. US passport holders arriving at Silvio Pettirossi can obtain a visa on arrival (currently around USD 160, cash only). If entering overland without a pre-arranged visa, check requirements before travel — rules differ by entry point. All visitors need a passport valid for at least six months beyond their entry date.
