Yaguarón is a small town 48km southeast of Asunción, an easy stop on the Circuito de Oro. Its main attraction is the Iglesia San Buenaventura — an extraordinary 18th-century Franciscan mission church and one of the finest surviving colonial religious buildings in South America. The Guaraní-baroque carved interior is remarkable: painted wooden ceiling, ornate pulpit, and a richly decorated altarpiece, all made by Guaraní craftsmen working under Franciscan direction. Entry is free; morning hours give the best light.
A few blocks away, the Museo Dr. Francia occupies a colonial house connected to Paraguay's founding dictator — an interesting complement to the church visit. The town itself is small and unhurried, with a crafts tradition in wooden carving. Easily combined with Aregua and a stop at Lake Ypacaraí on a day trip from the capital.
