The massive Inca fortress on the hill above Cuzco, and a work of stone-fitting so precise that the joints in its three-tiered zigzag walls still cannot be prised open with a knife. The largest stones weigh over 125 tonnes. Sacsayhuamán was partially dismantled by the Spanish for building material after their siege here in 1536, but the sheer scale of what remains is breathtaking. Walk up from the Plaza de Armas via the stepped street of Resbalosa (45 minutes) or take a taxi; combined ticket (Boleto Turístico) required.
