Casa del Oidor

Colonial mansion on the Plaza Mayor with carved wooden balconies

The Casa del Oidor is a corner building on the Plaza Mayor that preserves the best surviving example of Lima's distinctive carved-wood "Moorish" closed balconies — the dark green latticed miradores that once allowed women of the upper classes to look out onto the street without being seen. The building was the home of one of the senior magistrates (oidores) of the colonial Audiencia.

It is not generally open to visitors but is one of the most photographed buildings on the plaza. The balcony detail and the heavy stone door surround give a sense of what most of the centre's buildings looked like before earthquake reconstructions and 20th-century alterations.
