Lima's most compelling day trip is Pachacámac, a vast pre-Columbian sanctuary 40 kilometres south of the city on the dry coastal plain. The site served as the central Andes' most important oracle for over a thousand years, drawing pilgrims from as far as Ecuador and Bolivia. The Inca added their own Temple of the Sun alongside the earlier painted pyramid rather than demolish it — a measure of the site's prestige. The on-site museum, opened in 2015, displays the famous wooden idol and traces the cultures that built the complex. Allow a half-day and go by taxi or organised tour.
