Shopping

For upscale shopping, head to Miraflores: Larcomar, built into the cliffs above the Pacific at the end of Avenida Larco, is the glossiest mall in the city, with international brands, cinemas, and ocean-view restaurants. The surrounding streets are full of small boutiques. Av. Petit Thouars in Miraflores is the main handicraft strip, with half a dozen mercados artesanales selling alpaca knitwear, woven textiles, silver jewellery and ceramics at reasonable prices. Every evening an open-air handicrafts market fills the edge of Parque Kennedy in central Miraflores.

For cheaper shopping and more local atmosphere, the Jirón de la Unión pedestrian street in the historic centre is lined with clothing shops and street vendors; the Mercado de Surquillo is the best food market in the city; and Polvos Azules, near Avenida Grau, is a vast indoor market where limeños buy everything from electronics to pirated films — fun to browse, but pickpocketing is a real problem, so go without a camera or visible valuables.
