A massive sand dune rising about 2,078 metres above sea level on the eastern edge of the Nazca plain -- said to be one of the tallest sand dunes in the world. The ascent takes three to four hours through loose sand; the views across the Nazca Valley and towards the Andes are exceptional. Sandboarding is possible on the descent. The dune is about 9 km from Nazca town; guided tours are available from agencies in the centre. Most trips leave before dawn to avoid the worst of the heat -- bring plenty of water and sun protection regardless.
