The Islas Ballestas, a cluster of rocky islands about 20 kilometres southwest of Pisco, are one of Peru's most accessible wildlife spectacles. Boat tours depart early morning from the Paracas waterfront, passing the Paracas Candelabra before reaching the islands themselves, where thousands of Humboldt penguins, blue-footed boobies, Peruvian pelicans, cormorants, and Inca terns crowd every ledge and rock arch. Sea lion colonies bark from the lower rocks, and on lucky mornings dolphins follow the wake of the boat.
Tours last about two hours and cost around USD 10–15. You cannot land on the islands — the colonies are protected — but the boats circle close enough that you can watch penguins waddling, sea lions squabbling, and boobies plunge-diving from surprisingly short range. Go as early as possible; the morning light is better for photography, the sea is calmer, and the animal activity is at its peak.
