Balcón del Conde de Lemos

17th-century colonial house with a fine carved wooden balcony, on a corner near the cathedral

A 17th-century house at the corner of Jirón Deustua and Jirón Conde de Lemos, half a block from the cathedral. The building is best known for its richly carved wooden balcony — the kind of decorated cedar balcony that was common across colonial Lima and rare in the high altiplano. Local legend says that the Viceroy Conde de Lemos stayed here on a visit to Puno in 1668.

The house now serves as a small cultural centre and occasional exhibition space. Even if there is nothing on, the building is worth a stop for the balcony alone — one of the few surviving pieces of colonial domestic architecture in the city centre.
