Cutimbo

Less-visited chullpas on a basalt mesa south of Puno, quieter alternative to Sillustani

A smaller and far less visited site of pre-Inca funerary towers, about 22 kilometres south of Puno on a flat-topped basalt mesa. The chullpas at Cutimbo are similar to those at Sillustani but less restored, often weathered to a striking dark grey, and carry well-preserved relief carvings of pumas, snakes, and monkeys.

The site is a short walk up from the road below — about 30 minutes' climb — and you may have it almost to yourself, especially outside peak season. There is no formal entry fee in the way there is at Sillustani; a small payment to the caretaker (if present) is appreciated. Worth the trip for travellers who want the chullpa experience without the tour-bus crowd, or who have an extra day in Puno.
