Currency
The currency is the Surinamese dollar (SRD). Carry SRD for ordinary purchases and enough cash for the interior; cards and foreign bank cards do not work everywhere. US dollars and euros are useful as backup, but pay day-to-day prices in SRD and check the Central Bank rate before exchanging money. Never change cash with someone who approaches you in the street.
Language
Dutch is the official language. Sranan Tongo is the everyday bridge between communities, while Sarnami, Javanese, Maroon languages, and Indigenous languages are also heard. English often works in tourism, but a few words of Dutch are useful outside that circle.
Health
Suriname was certified malaria-free by the World Health Organization in 2025. That does not make mosquito protection optional: dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, and other mosquito-borne infections remain relevant. Yellow-fever vaccination is recommended for most travellers aged nine months or older, and proof is required for some arrival routes. Discuss your itinerary with a travel-health clinician and check current outbreak notices before departure.
Safety
Do not treat Paramaribo as risk-free. Pickpocketing, burglary, and armed robbery occur, including around quiet streets and parks. Avoid isolated areas after dark, keep phones and jewellery out of sight, and arrange a known taxi. For the interior, use an established operator: distances, communications, and medical access matter as much as crime.
Communications
Mobile coverage is strongest in Paramaribo and along the coast and drops away in the interior. Ask your guide what, if anything, works on your route and leave plans with someone before a remote journey.
Electricity
Both 127V and 220V supplies exist, and sockets are not fully standardised. Bring a universal adapter and check the voltage before plugging in equipment that is not dual-voltage.
Opening Hours
Banks and government offices often close early in the afternoon. Confirm hours for any office you cannot afford to miss.
Time Zone
Suriname is UTC-3 all year round, with no daylight saving time.
