Paramaribo and the Coast
Within Paramaribo, taxis are the simplest option for longer trips; agree on the fare before leaving. Privately run minibuses follow fixed routes but not a useful published timetable. They are cheap once you know the route, confusing when you do not.
Shared minibuses and taxis cover the coastal strip east toward Albina and west toward Nieuw Nickerie. Start early: services thin out later in the day, and a missed border connection can mean an overnight stop.
Into the Interior
Getting to Suriname's interior takes more planning. The main options are:
By road and river. The road reaches Pokigron and the Atjoni landing, where boats continue along the Upper Suriname River. Public boats are geared to local needs, not sightseeing, so arrange transfers with your host or guide.
By small aircraft. Zorg en Hoop Airport handles domestic charters to interior airstrips. They save days of road and river travel, but schedules, baggage limits, and weather disruptions make advance coordination essential. Check current aviation safety advice when choosing an operator.
Nature Parks
Brownsberg Nature Park is the easiest major forest destination by road, though the final approach can be rough and a high-clearance vehicle is sensible after rain.
Most other reserves require a boat, a flight, or both. Visitor facilities can close for long periods, so confirm access directly with the reserve manager or a reputable local operator before paying for onward transport.
Driving
Suriname drives on the left. Main coastal roads are paved; interior roads can deteriorate quickly in rain. Check whether your licence is accepted and whether the rental company requires an international driving permit.
