Raleighvallen

Surinamese rainforest reserve on the Coppename River, known for birdlife and Voltzberg's granite dome.

Raleighvallen is the practical gateway to the UNESCO-listed Central Suriname Nature Reserve. The Coppename River, Foengoe Island, forest trails, and the granite dome of Voltzberg give a visitor a small but varied sample of a reserve that extends vastly beyond the accessible area.

Birders come for Guiana cock-of-the-rock, macaws, toucans, and forest species that are difficult near the coast. Primates are often heard or seen, but this is dense forest, not a safari park, and no operator can promise large mammals.

Access is normally by charter flight or a long road-and-river combination from Paramaribo. STINASU lists Raleighvallen among the protected areas currently receiving visitors, but facilities and transport remain basic. Confirm the exact itinerary, baggage allowance, sleeping arrangements, and emergency plan before paying.

Activities

Raleighvallen, deep inside the Central Suriname Nature Reserve, is the serious end of the country's rainforest: three days minimum, a boat up the Coppename, and a hard climb up the Voltzberg granite dome for the view over unbroken canopy. Cock-of-the-rock nest on the way up.

This is not a trip you improvise. It is sold as a fixed multi-day expedition, and the operators here are the ones who run it.
