Montevideo's bar and café culture is unhurried and sociable. The cafés of the Ciudad Vieja are the most characterful, many occupying 19th-century buildings. The Pocitos neighbourhood has a more contemporary scene along Bulevar España and the streets near the beach. Uruguayans drink mate constantly — the national drink — but coffee is taken seriously too.
