Founded in 1937 and still in the family, this bodega sits at Punta Yeguas in Montevideo's rural west, close enough to the Río de la Plata that the river air reaches the vines. It trades its wines under the La Estancia label, and the Ministry of Tourism register lists it under that name.
It is a small working winery rather than a visitor centre, which means the visit is whoever is there showing you round the presses and pouring what is open. Call or message ahead — turning up unannounced at a place this size gets you a locked gate.
The western suburbs are not an obvious afternoon out, but the combination of a 1937 cellar and a view of the estuary is a particular kind of Montevideo that the centre does not show you.
