Montevideo's best market takes over the length of Calle Tristán Narvaja in Cordón every Sunday morning. It runs from around 9am to 2pm and covers several blocks with everything from fresh produce, cheese, and bread to second-hand books, antiques, vinyl records, coins, and curious junk.
The book section is one of the largest second-hand book markets in South America — if you read Spanish, allow extra time here. The antique section has Argentine and Uruguayan silver, mate gourds, old photographs, and the usual jumble of household goods from cleared-out houses. At its best on a sunny Sunday morning when the neighbourhood comes out in force. Arrive early for the best finds.
