Museo Bolivariano

The Bolivarian Museum stands next door to the Casa Natal de Simón Bolívar and the two are usually visited together. While the Casa Natal is the period-furnished birthplace, the museum holds the substantial collection: Bolívar's own pistols, military sabres, personal correspondence, the bed he died in (transported back from Santa Marta in the nineteenth century), and the casket that brought his remains home in 1842.

Many of Bolívar's letters and orders are displayed in facsimile alongside originals. A modest collection of historical paintings includes portraits of Bolívar's principal lieutenants — Sucre, Páez, Santander — and a few large-scale Independence-era battle scenes. Free, open mornings; combined ticket with the Casa Natal.
