Day Trips

The nearest worthwhile day trip is Colonia Tovar, the German mountain village an hour and a half west of the city, founded by Black Forest immigrants in 1843 and still recognisable as such — half-timbered houses, sausages, strudel. The road climbs through cloud forest and is best on a clear morning.

The Ávila mountain itself is a day trip from anywhere in the city: hike up from Sabas Nieves to Pico Naiguatá, or ride the teleférico from Maripérez to the old Hotel Humboldt at the summit for the view over the city to the south and the Caribbean to the north.

The Caribbean coast is 30 minutes north over the mountain — Catia La Mar, La Guaira, Macuto, Naiguatá. Beach quality is variable and parts of the coast have safety issues; Naiguatá and the islands east are generally considered better than the corridor closer to the airport. Los Roques, the offshore archipelago that is Venezuela's finest beach destination, is a short flight from Caracas and is best done as an overnight rather than a day trip.
