Centro Sambil in Chacao is the largest shopping mall in Caracas — six floors of stores, a multiplex cinema, a bowling alley, and a food court — opened in 1998 and for years claimed as the largest mall in Latin America. The architecture is generic late-90s mall, but the interior is busy and clean, and the security perimeter is one of the most professional in the city. For visitors it is one of the safer places to shop, eat, or kill time, and a metro stop (Chacao) is two blocks away.
A second branch, Sambil La Candelaria, opened later in the colonial centre but has had a difficult history of partial operation. The Chacao branch remains the flagship.
