A small nineteenth-century military barracks on the hillside of the 23 de Enero district, above the colonial centre. Originally built in 1905 as a military training school, the building became famous as the launchpad of Hugo Chávez's 4 February 1992 coup attempt against President Carlos Andrés Pérez — Chávez led his uprising from these grounds before being arrested two days later.
In 2013, following Chávez's death, the cuartel was converted into a mausoleum holding his remains. The complex is open to the public on most days, with a permanent honour guard, an exhibition of personal effects, and the marble sarcophagus on the upper floor. The hilltop terrace gives a clear view across central Caracas. Politically charged; visit by day, ideally with a local guide.
