The Panteón Nacional is the secular shrine of Venezuela — a former Trinitarian church on the northern edge of the colonial centre, reconsecrated in 1875 to receive the remains of the country's national heroes. Simón Bolívar's sarcophagus is at the centre under the dome, surrounded by murals by Tito Salas illustrating his life. Around 140 other figures are buried in the side aisles, from Independence-era generals to twentieth-century intellectuals.
A 2013 extension built by the Chávez government — the Mausoleum of Bolívar, a soaring white block beside the original building — houses the remains in a more dramatic setting. The honour guard changes hourly. Entry is free; check current opening hours before visiting.
