Museo de Arte Contemporáneo

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Caracas — MAC — occupies several floors of the Parque Central tower complex and holds one of the most important contemporary art collections in Latin America. Founded in 1973 under the patronage of the businesswoman Sofía Ímber, the collection grew aggressively through the 1970s and 80s and at one time included works by Picasso, Bacon, Miró, Botero, Henry Moore, and a strong line-up of Venezuelan kinetic artists — Soto, Cruz-Diez, Otero.

The collection has been under political pressure since the 2001 dismissal of Ímber by Hugo Chávez, and the public displays have been more limited in recent years. Several major works have been the subject of reported theft or unexplained disappearance. Check current opening status with your hotel before going.
