Ciudad Bolívar is the staging post for the most spectacular trips in Venezuela. The light-aircraft flight to Canaima is the standard route to Angel Falls — about an hour each way, with the falls usually visited from Canaima village by boat and on foot. Further south, La Gran Sabana — the high savanna of flat-topped tepuis that inspired Conan Doyle's Lost World — is best reached on multi-day tours arranged in Ciudad Bolívar. None of these is a true day trip; budget two to four days for a Canaima/Angel Falls combination.
