Ciudad Bolívar is for most visitors a launchpad — fly out to Canaima, see Angel Falls, drive the Gran Sabana. But the colonial centre along the Orinoco repays a half day's exploration: the riverfront walk, the cathedral, the museums, and the houses associated with the South American independence wars. Stay one or two nights either side of a Canaima trip and you will see more than you expect.
