Catedral de Ciudad Bolívar

Eighteenth-century cathedral on the Plaza Bolívar

The Catedral Metropolitana de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves stands on the Plaza Bolívar at the centre of the old town. Building began in 1764 and dragged on for nearly a century — the result is a relatively plain colonial Spanish church with a single tower, painted white with deep ochre trim. The two-storey façade and the simple wood ceiling inside are typical of late Spanish colonial work in eastern Venezuela.

The cathedral sits just inland from the river and serves as the seat of the archdiocese of Ciudad Bolívar. The Plaza Bolívar in front of it is a small green square with a central statue of the Liberator on horseback — a useful landmark and a pleasant place to sit between visits to the surrounding museums.
