Puente de Angostura

The first bridge across the Orinoco, opened in 1967

The Angostura Bridge spans the Orinoco about five kilometres west of the old town — a 1,678-metre suspension bridge that was, when it opened in 1967, the longest in Latin America and the first to cross the Orinoco at any point. The river narrows here to about 1.2 kilometres (Angostura means "narrows" in Spanish), making the crossing engineering-feasible despite the river's enormous flow.

A short detour from the bridge approach gives a viewpoint over the river and the bridge — one of the better photographs in Ciudad Bolívar. You can drive across the bridge as part of the route south towards Puerto Ordaz; there is no pedestrian access.
