El Abismo — "The Abyss" — is a viewpoint a short walk from El Paují where the high Gran Sabana plateau falls away in a single dramatic step. From the rim you look down hundreds of metres onto unbroken Amazon rainforest stretching south toward the Brazilian border, with mist sitting in the valleys most mornings.
The walk in from the village takes 30–40 minutes through grassland and scrub. There is no fence at the edge — caution required. Sunrise is the classic time, when the canopy below is layered in cloud and the line between savanna and jungle is at its most stark.
