Quebrada de Jaspe

Quebrada de Jaspe — Jasper Creek — is one of the Gran Sabana's signature stops, just off the main road south of Kavanayén. A small river runs across a single slab of vivid red jasper, with the stone glowing through clear shallow water and turning brilliant in late afternoon light.

There is a short trail from the parking area down to the creek. The flow is best from June to November, when the falls at the lower end of the slab become a proper sheet of water. In drier months the falls shrink but the stone is even easier to walk on. It is busy by Gran Sabana standards — meaning you might share it with a handful of other vehicles.

A story
The streambed here is a single sheet of solid jasper — a hard, polished red-orange stone formed nearly two billion years ago. When the water is low you can walk across it barefoot and feel the warmth in the rock.
