Tigzirt

Kabyle coastal town where Roman Iomnium's ruins stand beside a sheltered stony Mediterranean beach

Tigzirt is a small coastal town in Algeria, close to Tizi Ouzou in the Kabyle region. It used to be a popular seaside getaway for Kabyle families, and the stony beach and relaxed atmosphere still draw visitors in summer.

The main historic attraction is the Basilique Chrétienne, a 4th-century Christian basilica in the centre of town with well-preserved mosaic floors. The ancient Roman town of Iomnium occupied this site, and its ruins — forum foundations, columns, and civic buildings — are scattered around the modern settlement. The beach is sheltered and pleasant, best visited from June through September when the weather and sea conditions are reliably good.

Things to Do

Tigzirt's appeal is split between its Roman past and its Mediterranean present. The ruins of Iomnium are scattered across the modern town, and the beaches draw Kabyle families every summer. It is a small place, easily explored in a day.
