Aït Hichem Village

One of the most characteristic traditional Kabyle villages accessible from Tizi Ouzou, Aït Hichem sits at altitude in the foothills of the Djurdjura with the clustered stone houses and communal square (tajmaât) that define the Kabyle village form. The tajmaât — a paved open-air space flanked by stone benches — was historically the place where the village assembly (ath jemaa) met to make collective decisions, a form of direct democracy that persisted long after outside authorities claimed sovereignty.

The village is a working community, not a tourist attraction, and that is what makes it worth visiting. Locals are generally hospitable to respectful visitors; a few words of greeting in Kabyle (azul for hello) go a long way. The surrounding terraced slopes, planted with olive and fig trees, give a clear sense of the agricultural economy that sustained these mountain communities for centuries.
