The Museu Regional do Benguela occupies a colonial-era building in the old town and covers the history and culture of the Benguela Province. The collection includes ethnographic material from the various peoples of the hinterland — the Ovimbundu, Nyaneka-Humbi, and others — as well as some historical artefacts from the colonial period and documentation of the railway.
Opening hours can be irregular, and the collection is modest by international standards. But the context matters: seeing the actual physical material culture of the communities that were most affected by both colonial rule and the decades of civil war gives the wider history of Angola a concreteness that books alone don't provide.
