Estádio das Mangueiras

Saurimo's main football ground — named after the mango trees that shade the surrounding streets — holds around 7,000 spectators and is home to Progresso da Lunda Sul, the province's club in the national Girabola league. If a match is on, it is worth attending: Angolan football crowds are passionate and the stadium doubles as a community gathering point. The renovated facility on the Agostinho Neto boulevard is easy to find and the match-day atmosphere gives a glimpse of local life that most visitors miss.

A story
The stadium's informal name comes from the avenue of mature mango trees planted during the colonial period along the road outside. Locals still gather under them on match days, listening to the crowd noise and selling grilled chicken and cold Cuca beer from makeshift stalls.
