Getting There

The most practical way to reach Saurimo is by air. TAAG Angola Airlines operates several flights a week between Luanda's Quatro de Fevereiro Airport and Saurimo Airport (IATA: VHC), with a flight time of around 90 minutes. Book as early as possible — seats sell out quickly, particularly around the end of the month when mining workers rotate in and out.

The overland route from Luanda takes several days on rough roads and involves long stretches of sparse savannah. Police checkpoints are frequent throughout Lunda Sul, and independent travellers should carry multiple copies of all documents. Public transport by shared taxi exists but is slow and uncomfortable over these distances. Most overland travellers are truck drivers or people returning to villages with supplies — hitching is possible but requires patience and flexibility.
