The central market is the social and commercial heart of Saurimo. Produce vendors, cloth sellers, and mechanics' stalls occupy the same maze of tin-roofed walkways from early morning until early afternoon. This is also the best place to look for Chokwe crafts — carved wooden masks, figurines, and woven baskets — sold by vendors who have carried them in from surrounding villages. Prices are significantly lower than in Luanda. Arrive before noon for the best selection and the liveliest atmosphere; the market winds down by mid-afternoon.
