Gaborone Dam, situated south of the city centre, provides the capital's water supply and has developed into a popular recreational area. The dam attracts good birdlife, particularly waterbirds and raptors, and the surrounding greenery offers a respite from the dust of the city.
The Gaborone Yacht Club operates on the dam and welcomes visitors for sailing and social events. Fishing is popular, and the dam's shoreline makes for a pleasant walk in the early morning or late afternoon when the heat eases. Crocodiles have been spotted in the water, so swimming is not advisable.
