Getting Around

Gaborone is a spread-out, car-oriented city with no urban rail and only limited public bus services. The most practical way to get around is by taxi or hired car.

Taxis are widely available and relatively cheap by southern African standards. There are no meters — agree a price before you get in. Apps like Jona (Botswana's local ride-hailing service) have made getting around easier in recent years.

Combis (shared minibuses) run fixed routes and are the cheapest option but require local knowledge of routes and stops.

Car hire is available at the airport and major hotels and gives you the most flexibility, especially for trips to Mokolodi, Kgale Hill, and the Gaborone Dam. The roads within the city are generally in good condition. Drive on the left.

Walking works for the central area around the Main Mall but the city is too spread out to rely on it entirely.
