National Museum and Art Gallery

The National Museum and Art Gallery on Independence Road, just northwest of the Main Mall, is Gaborone's most worthwhile indoor destination. The permanent collections cover traditional Tswana crafts, material culture from Botswana's various peoples, and a fine art gallery focusing on southern African artists.

The San collection is particularly interesting, documenting the hunting and gathering culture of the Kalahari's original inhabitants. The art gallery holds rotating exhibitions alongside its permanent holdings, and the complex also serves as the headquarters of Botswana's national conservation effort. Entry is inexpensive; the museum is closed Mondays.

A story
The museum holds one of the more complete collections of San (Bushmen) artefacts in southern Africa, including tools, musical instruments, and ritual objects assembled during a period when the San of the Kalahari were still living much as they had for thousands of years. The art gallery section tends to punch above its weight — Botswana has produced a number of internationally recognised painters, and the permanent collection reflects this.
