Maun Airport is worth mentioning because it is unlike almost any other airport in the world. The main terminal handles commercial flights from Gaborone, Johannesburg, and Windhoek — but the real spectacle is the general aviation apron alongside it, which on any morning is thick with Cessna Caravans, Pilatus Porters, and assorted small turboprops being loaded for runs to bush airstrips across the Okavango and Chobe.
Watching the operation is a minor attraction in itself: porters loading cool boxes, safari guides comparing wildlife notes, and small planes taking off every few minutes for destinations that don't appear on any road map. The control tower is busy with radio traffic that reads like a safari roster — "Savuti camp, Chief's Island, Vumbura."
If you're catching a bush flight, arrive early. The weighing of luggage is taken seriously — every kilo counts in a six-seater — and soft bags are standard. Cameras go on your lap, not in the hold.
