Nhabe Museum

The Nhabe Museum is Maun's small but worthwhile community museum, housed in a building in the centre of town. It covers the history and culture of the BaTawana people, who have inhabited the Okavango region for centuries and whose decisions shaped Moremi Game Reserve into existence. The exhibits include traditional crafts, tools, clothing, and photographs documenting life in the delta communities before tourism transformed the economy.

The museum also has a section on the natural history of the Okavango, including information on the flora and fauna you might expect to see. It is a good place to spend an hour before heading out into the bush, and the staff are knowledgeable and willing to talk. Entry is inexpensive.

A craft market operates alongside the museum where local artisans sell baskets, wood carvings, and beadwork. Botswana is renowned for its woven baskets — the Nhabe area produces some of the finest, with intricate geometric patterns that take weeks to complete. Prices here are fair without the markup you'd pay at lodges.
