Ring Road

The 367-kilometre loop through the Bamenda Highlands that connects Bamenda with Kumbo, Nkambe, Wum, and Bafut — passing chiefdom palaces, crater lakes, waterfalls, and traditional villages. In peaceful times it is one of the great African road trips; the drive takes three to five days with overnight stops in chiefdom guest houses.

Since 2017 the road has been intermittently closed by the conflict in the anglophone regions and travel has been hazardous. Check current security advice before attempting the loop, and do not travel after dark even in calm periods. Land Cruiser, plenty of fuel, and a local driver are essential.

A story
The Ring Road was paved in fits and starts from the 1960s onwards and has never been fully completed; sections wash out each rainy season. Even before the crisis it was a hard drive: 367 km of rough laterite, mud, and occasional tarmac, with at least one major river crossing usually requiring a ferry.
