Menoua Highlands Hiking

The highlands around Dschang offer some of the best walking in western Cameroon — a landscape of steep green hills, small farming villages, tea plantations, coffee groves, and the occasional waterfall dropping into the narrow valleys between ridges. At 1,400 metres, the temperature is cool enough to make sustained walking comfortable even at midday, and the views from the higher ridges extend across a corrugated landscape of remarkable visual complexity.

The area is not developed for trekking in the way that East African highlands are — there are no marked trails, no mountain huts, no official guided hiking industry. Walking here means hiring a local guide through the university or one of the town's better guesthouses, and the experience is correspondingly more improvised and more intimate. The villages accessible on foot within two to three hours of Dschang are largely subsistence farming communities that see very few foreign visitors, and the landscape is genuinely beautiful.

A story
The Menoua highlands sit at the same altitude as the Kenyan highlands that produce tea for the global market — and the conditions are similar. Cameroon tea has been grown here since the colonial era, and the rolling hillsides of ordered tea bushes stretching across the steep terrain are one of the most striking agricultural landscapes in central Africa.
