Lac de Dschang

Lac de Dschang is a small crater lake a few kilometres from the town centre — a pleasant walk or short motorbike taxi ride through the highland countryside. The lake sits in a green bowl of hills, with walking paths around the perimeter and paddleboats available for hire at the waterfront. The setting is scenic and the pace is unhurried.

The lake area is a popular afternoon destination for university students and local families, and on weekends small food stalls operate at the waterside. The combination of the cool air at this altitude, the green water of the lake, and the forested slopes rising behind make it one of the more attractive spots in the Menoua highlands. The walk from town takes about 45 minutes on foot and passes through residential and market areas that provide a good ground-level view of everyday Dschang.

A story
The lake sits in a volcanic crater — one of several crater lakes in the western Cameroon highlands formed by the same volcanic activity that created the Cameroon highlands' characteristic landscape of steep hills, red laterite soils, and abrupt valleys. The Cameroon highlands are geologically part of the Cameroon Line, a chain of volcanic mountains running from the Gulf of Guinea to Lake Chad.
