Pico do Fogo

Pico do Fogo rises to 2,829 metres and is the highest point in Cape Verde and one of the most active volcanoes in the Atlantic. The standard ascent route begins from Chã das Caldeiras village, inside the caldera at about 1,700 metres elevation, and gains roughly 1,000 metres of elevation to reach the summit cone. The climb takes four to six hours up; the descent is under two hours.

A guide is mandatory — no solo ascents are permitted, and this is genuinely enforced, not just a technicality. Local guides are available in Chã das Caldeiras and are worth the modest fee for their knowledge of the terrain and current volcanic conditions. The summit offers extraordinary views in all directions — on a clear day you can see other islands of Cape Verde across the ocean.

Start as early as possible, ideally before 6 am, to beat the midday heat and maximise visibility before afternoon clouds roll in. Bring water, sun protection, and a warm layer for the summit.

A story
The 2014 eruption caught the inhabitants of Chã das Caldeiras by surprise. Lava flows destroyed most of the village — the church, the winery, hundreds of homes — in a matter of days. Within two years, most residents had returned and rebuilt, planting new vines in the same ash that had buried their old ones. The 1995 eruption had done the same thing, and they had come back then too. It is not stubbornness exactly — it is that the volcanic soil is the most fertile soil on the island, and the people of Chã have been here for generations.
