The bronze statue of Cesaria Evora stands just outside the Mindelo cultural centre, a couple of blocks from the seafront. The Cape Verdean singer (1941–2011) is the city's most famous daughter — she grew up here, sang for decades in the bars and clubs of Mindelo before being discovered at the age of forty-seven, and is buried in the city cemetery.
It is a small monument, easily missed, but a fitting tribute to a singer whose voice came to define an entire musical genre. Locals leave flowers and small candles at the feet of the statue. Combine with a visit to the nearby Casa Cesaria Evora, her former home, on Rua de Tchom de Marinha.
