Pro-Cathedral of Our Lady of the Light

The Pro-Cathedral of Our Lady of the Light, one block south of the Praca Nova, is the principal Catholic church of the diocese of Mindelo and the city's main religious landmark. The current building is a substantial mid-nineteenth-century neoclassical structure, with a pale facade, twin bell towers, and a high single nave inside.

The interior is plain but well kept: blue-and-white azulejo tiles in the side chapels, a fine wooden choir loft, and an elaborate gilded high altar. The square in front fills with families on Sunday mornings after Mass, when the doors of the cathedral are thrown open and the music carries across to the Praca Nova.
