Mambéré Bar

One of Berberati's better-known drinking spots, named for the Mambéré River that runs through the prefecture. Cold beer (Castel and Mocaf are the staples), palm wine, and occasionally locally distilled arki are on offer. The clientele is a cross-section of the city — traders, NGO staff, local government workers — and the bar fills up from early evening. Music plays, conversations carry across tables, and the night goes late.

Like most bars in Berberati, the setting is unpretentious: a covered terrace, plastic furniture, a generator that keeps the lights and music going when the grid goes down. That is to say, most evenings.
